A Heat Advisory remains in effect to 8 pm Thursday, August 1, 2024 including the following Washington, DC region jurisdictions.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
MARYLAND: southern Baltimore, Baltimore City, Cecil, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert, central/southeast Montgomery, central/southeast Howard, southeast Harford.
VIRGINIA: Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, southern Fauquier, central/southeast Prince William, Manassas, Manassas Park.

* WHAT…For the first Heat Advisory, heat index values up to 107. For the second Heat Advisory, heat index values up to 108 expected.

* WHERE…Portions of central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, The District of Columbia and central and northern Virginia.

* WHEN…For the first Heat Advisory, until 8 PM EDT this evening. For the second Heat Advisory, from noon to 8 PM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS…Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

* WHAT…For the Heat Advisory, heat index values up to 106. For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 expected.

* WHERE…In Maryland, Dorchester, Inland Worcester, Somerset, and Wicomico Counties. In Virginia, Accomack County.

* WHEN…For the Heat Advisory, until 8 PM EDT this evening. For the Excessive Heat Warning, from 11 AM to 8 PM EDT Friday.

* IMPACTS…Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
