A Snow Squall Warning is in effect to 10:15 pm Tuesday, January 14, 2025 including the following Washington, DC region jurisdictions.

MARYLAND: Garrett.

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

  • Snow Squall Warning for…
    Garrett County in western Maryland…
  • Until 1015 PM EST.
  • At 934 PM EST, a dangerous snow squall was located over Friendsville, or 10 miles northwest of Bittinger, moving southeast at 40 mph.

    HAZARD…Whiteout conditions with near zero visibility associated with intense bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds leading to blowing snow. Wind gusts up to 25 mph.

    SOURCE…Radar and webcams.

    IMPACT…Dangerous and life-threatening travel conditions are expected to develop rapidly in the warning area.

This includes Interstate 68 in Maryland between mile markers 1 and 30.

Bittinger, Grantsville, Friendsville, Deer Park, Accident, Merrill, Jennings, Keysers Ridge, Mineral Spring, Deep Creek Lake State Park, McHenry, Selbysport, Big Run State Park, New Germany, Piney Grove, and McComas Beach.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

If traveling on a highway, find the nearest exit or rest area and park safely away from traffic. Allow snow squalls to pass before attempting to resume travel.

There is no safe place on a highway when a snow squall hits. Visibility and traction are immediately lost in whiteout conditions, making it difficult or impossible to slow down and avoid stopped vehicles. Delay travel or safely exit the highway before the snow squall arrives.
