A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect Friday, November 22 to 3 am Saturday, November 23, 2024 including the following Washington, DC region jurisdictions.

MARYLAND: Garrett.

…WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 AM EST SATURDAY…

* WHAT…Heavy snow and near blizzard conditions. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, with locally 1 to 2 feet along the ridgetops. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph through tonight.

* WHERE…Garrett County.

* WHEN…Until 3 AM EST Saturday. The heaviest snow and lowest visibility are forecast through about 10 PM this evening.

* IMPACTS…Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Near blizzard conditions are possible this evening. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely through this evening. Snow may transition to a period of freezing rain or drizzle late tonight into Saturday morning. Wind chills in the teens and 20s are expected through tonight.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.

* WHEN…Until 6 AM EST Saturday. The heaviest snow and lowest visibility are forecast through about midnight tonight.
