Virginia 3rd in field hockey poll; Maryland drops to 5th

The Virginia Cavaliers remain undefeated and in 3rd place in the new college field hockey coaches poll released this week at 3-0 while the Maryland Terrapins fell off one spot to fifth place after taking their first loss of the season last Sunday in a neutral site contest.

Virginia annihilated Temple at home last Friday 7-0 before going on to score a key road win at then #11 ranked Liberty 2-1 last Sunday to retain their third place standing this week. Virginia only now trails the Big Ten’s Northwestern and ACC rival North Carolina in the latest polling.

Maryland split a series of games this past week on Northwestern’s campus, defeating then #17 Boston College 2-0 before falling to then #5 Duke 1-0. That last Terps loss dropped Maryland from the ranks of unbeaten teams and caused it to flip poll positions with Duke as the Blue Devils moved up into 4th while Maryland fell to 5th.
