West Texas Desert Hawks arena football team ceases operations

The West Texas Desert Hawks arena football team has ceased operations for the 2024 season, per a Tuesday report from Shady Sports Network citing player sources that was later confirmed by additional media outlets. West Texas had been scheduled to play at the Salina Liberty this Saturday in the Desert Hawks’ regular season finale.

West Texas moved over to the revived Arena Football League for this season after playing its inaugural season in the National Arena League as the West Texas Warbirds. The NAL later sued and gained a temporary injunction against West Texas playing AFL games before the two sides reached a settlement.

The Arena Football League is now down to eight teams, half of the original sixteen team field that first started the season with Rapid City, Oregon and West Texas having dropped after the midseason change of league management. The Salina Liberty are now looking for a replacement opponent to meet at home this weekend.‍
