The local radio blackout of Westwood One Sports NFL game broadcasts involving the Washington Commanders has been lifted for this weekend’s conference championship round, allowing radio stations in the Washington, DC area to carry the Westwood One Sports call of Sunday’s Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles contest.
The Audacy owned WJFK-FM 106.7 (aka 106.7 The Fan) and WTEM 980 (aka The Team 980) will both air Sunday’s NFC Championship game via Westwood One Sports radio network with WTEM 980 also carrying the AFC Championship with the Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs from Westwood One Sports.
Westwood One broadcasts of both Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens games are normally not carried in the Washington, DC area as the Commanders and Ravens home stadiums each fall within the designated 75 mile radius for triggering local radio blackouts of national broadcasts. The blackouts are designed to allow exclusivity for the local teams’ own official broadcasts in their home areas.
Local blackouts of Westwood One radio broadcasts though no longer apply once the NFL playoffs reach the conference championship round, allowing the Commanders conference championship game to air via D.C.’s Westwood One Sports affiliates. Local radio blackouts would also not have applied had the Ravens reached the AFC Championship game and will not be applied if the Commanders make Super Bowl LIX.
The Washington Commanders own official radio network broadcast will still air in the Washington, DC area via the iHeartMedia owned Commanders flagship radio station WBIG-FM 100.3 (aka Big 100.3). Should the Commanders make Super Bowl LIX, the Commanders call of that game would air via WBIG-FM as well.
Washington Commanders radio network affiliate stations aside from WBIG-FM though will not be allowed to carry further Commanders network broadcasts of postseason games. Westwood One enjoys radio exclusivity for the conference championships & Super Bowl outside of the respective team home markets with only the teams’ own flagship stations still being allowed to carry the team broadcasts.
Commanders radio network stations outside of the Washington, DC area must either carry the Westwood One broadcasts of further Commanders postseason games where the broadcasts are available to them or carry alternate programming. The Commanders radio calls will still be available nationwide via SiriusXM satellite radio & NFL+ streaming.
